Not only sugar is primary source of excess calories, but the latest research shows that cancer cells absorb high fructose corn syrup, which is another reason to avoid it.
A few years ago, researchers from the University of California and Los Angeles found that tumor cells of the pancreas (pancreatic) use fructose to divide and reproduce, and contradicting earlier assumptions that all sugars are equal. Tumor cells that were fed with glucose and fructose, use these sugars in two different ways, said the research team.
Their results, published in the journal Cancer Research, could help to explain earlier studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease.
“These findings show that cancer cells can easily metabolize fructose in order to increase proliferation,” writ in 2010 Dr. Anthony Heaney and his colleagues at UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center.
“They have great significance for oncology patients that were prescribed diet of refined fructose, and show that with reducing of refined fructose or with termination of fructose treated actions may disrupt cancer growth,” he said.
Americans, a lot more than people in most other industrialized countries, eat an amazing amount of fructose, mostly high-fructose corn syrup, which is a mixture of fructose and glucose, used mainly in soft drinks, bread and a variety of other processed foods.
